Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reiterated his vow to invade the city of Rafah, where more than 1 million displaced Palestinians are currently seeking shelter.
“It will happen. There is a date,” Netanyahu declared in a video statement Monday (4/8), without elaborating.
The statement came after another ceasefire proposal fell off and no progress had been made in negotiations over the weekend in Cairo, Egypt. The United States, Israel’s closest ally, has said a ground operation into Rafah would be a mistake and has demanded a credible plan to protect civilians.
Israeli troops on Sunday (4/7) withdrew from Khan Younis. The destruction they left behind has made the city now inhabitable, said the Palestinians who visited the city. Many are seeking shelter in Rafah.
Meanwhile, the troop’s withdrawal marks another key point of the Israeli war. Defense officials say they’re regrouping ahead of a push into Rafah.
