Pope Leo XIV Shows Concern about Gaza and Ukraine

SEAToday.com, Jakarta - Pope Leo XIV showed his concern for Palestine by saying that children and residents of Gaza “have been plunged into the abyss of hunger.”

“Children, families, and the elderly in the Gaza Strip have been plunged into the abyss of hunger,”

He conveyed this in a speech at the inauguration mass in St. Peter's Square, Vatican, Sunday (5/18/2025) local time.

In his speech, the Pope said, “In the joy of faith and togetherness, we must not forget our brothers and sisters who are suffering from war,” as quoted by the Vatican News Agency as reported by Antara.

The Pope also touched on Ukraine, which is still at war with Russia. The Pope said that negotiations are very important in order to create a just and sustainable peace.

Pope Leo XIV was elected to replace Pope Francis who died. His real name is Robert Prevost, Pope Leo XIV is the first Pope in the last 200 years to come from the United States.
