Mengapa Pope Dikenal sebagai Paus di Indonesia?

SEAToday.com, Jakarta - Pemimpin Gereja Katolik Dunia Paus Fransiskus akan memimpin Misa Akbar di Gelora Bung Karno (GBK), Jakarta, Kamis, 5 September 2024. Misa Akbar ini akan diikuti sekitar 86 ribu umat Katolik dari seluruh Tanah Air.

Kedatangan Paus Fransiskus begitu menyita atensi warga Indonesia karena sosoknya yang penuh kesederhanaan.

Di sisi lain, tahukah Anda mengapa Pope dikenal dengan sebutan Paus di Indonesia? Dikutip dari unggahan dari Instagram resmi Majalah Digital Pemerintah Provinsi DKI Jakarta, Paus berasal dari bahasa Latin, yakni "papa" dan "pappas (bahasa Yunani) yang berarti "ayah."

Sementara dalam bahasa Italia, "papa" adalah panggilan akrab seorang anak kepada ayahnya. Panggilan papa mencerminkan posisi Paus sebagai "ayah rohani" atau pemimpin tertinggi spiritual Gereja Katolik.

Panggilan "papa" dalam bahasa Inggris berubah menjadi "pope."

Lantas, mengapa disebut Paus dalam bahasa Indonesia? Gelar Paus adalah istilah serapan dari bahasa Belanda "de Paus" untuk "Pope." Saat masa penjajahan, banyak misionaris Belanda datang ke Indonesia untuk menyebarkan agama Katolik.

Paus ke-266 (sekarang) adalah Paus Fransiskus yang bernama asli Jorge Mario Bergolio. Selain menjadi pemimpin umat Katolik, Paus juga menjadi kepala negara Vatikan di Roma, Italia.

Walau berada di kota Roma, Vatikan adalah negara berdaulat di luar Italia. Vatikan sendiri bergelar "The Holy See" atau Takhta Suci dalam hukum internasional.
