SEAToday.com, Jakarta - South Korea's Constitutional Court officially impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol, Friday (4/4/2025) today.

Quoted from Yonhap, the judges headed by Moon-Hyung-bae considered Yoon Suk Yeol's decision to declare martial law last December to have a negative impact on the constitution.

According to Moon, the decision was "unjustifiable" because there was no sufficient national crisis.

Therefore, the judges considered President Yoon to have violated the formal process of declaring martial law, violated the rights of members of parliament, and violated his duties as head of the armed forces by forcing soldiers to face the public, the judge added.

The decision to impeach Yoon was greeted with various reactions by the South Korean public. People who were anti-Yoon welcomed it with celebrations and jumped outside the court.

A different thing was seen from Yoon's supporters who filled his official residence.

After this, South Korea must hold a general election to elect a new president in the next 60 days. One name mentioned as Yoon's successor is opposition leader Lee Jae-myung.

Lee narrowly lost to Yoon in the 2022 presidential election.
