Indonesian Citizen Shot in Malaysia to Be Repatriated After Autopsy Completion

SEAToday.com, Jakarta - The Indonesian Embassy (KBRI) in Kuala Lumpur confirmed that the remains of an Indonesian citizen (WNI) identified as B, who was shot by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (APMM), will be repatriated to Indonesia once the autopsy process is complete.

In a written statement released by Indonesia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday, it was revealed that, based on information from the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) on Monday (Jan. 27), the deceased WNI identified as B was from Riau.

"The embassy will handle all procedures for the preparation of the body and facilitate its return to the family," the statement said.

Meanwhile, four other WNI who were injured in the incident have received medical treatment and are now reported to be in stable condition. The Indonesian Embassy has secured consular access and will visit them on Wednesday, January 29.

The incident occurred on January 24 at around 3 a.m. local time when APMM opened fire on a boat in the waters of Tanjung Rhu, Selangor. The shooting reportedly happened after the passengers were suspected of resisting authorities. The incident resulted in one WNI being killed and four others injured.

In response to the incident, the Indonesian Embassy in Kuala Lumpur immediately took action to protect the affected WNI, including submitting a diplomatic note to the Malaysian government. The note urged a thorough investigation into the incident, highlighting concerns over the possible use of excessive force by APMM.

Indonesia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the embassy in Kuala Lumpur have pledged to monitor the case closely. They will also provide consular assistance and legal support to ensure the rights of the WNI are protected under Malaysia’s legal system.
