SEAToday.com, Istanbul - A total of 34 countries contributing to the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) issued a joint statement Saturday (10/12) calling for protection for UN peacekeepers amid rising tensions in the region.
The joint statement, initiated by Poland, strongly condemned the attacks on the peacekeepers, saying “Such acts must stop immediately and must be adequately investigated.”
The statement urged all parties to respect UNIFIL's presence and ensure the safety of its members.
“We reaffirm our commitment to multilateral cooperation with the UN at its core. We call for respect for international law, in particular the United Nations Charter as well as relevant Security Council resolutions,” the statement added.
The countries, which include Brazil, China, France, Turkey and the United Kingdom, confirmed their full support for UNIFIL's mission to bring stability to southern Lebanon and promote peace.
