SEAToday.com, Beirut - Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah was killed in an Israeli strike. This news was confirmed by a militia group in Lebanon, Saturday (9/28).

AP reported that Hezbollah on Saturday stated that Nasrallah was killed in an Israeli airstrike that leveled six apartment buildings in Beirut the day before.

Who is Hassan Nasrallah? BBC reported that before his passing, Nasrallah has never been seen in the public eye for years out of fear of being killed by Israel.

Nasrallah was a figure that had close ties with Iran, who played an vital role in turning Hezbollah into the political and military force it is now. He was highly appreciated by the supporters of the group.

Under Nasrallah's leadership, Hezbollah helped train fighters from Palestinian armed group Hamas and militias in Iraq and Yemen, as well as helped in obtaining missiles and rockets from Iran used to fight against Israel.

He directed the Hezbollah to evolve from a militia formed to fight against Israeli troops in Lebanon into a military force that is stronger than the Lebanese national army, and a group that serves in the Lebanese politics and provides healthcare, education, and social services. It is also an important part of the effort of its supporters (Iran) in reaching regional supremacy.

Born in 1960, Hassan Nasrallah was raised in Bourj Hammoud, east of Beirut, where his father Abdul Karim managed a small vegetable shop. He was the eldest of nine siblings.

He joined Amal, which was a Shiah militia then, after Lebanon fell into a civil war in 1975. After living briefly in Najaf, Iraq, he returned to Amal in Lebanon before parting ways with it in 1982, not long after Israel invaded Lebanon as a response to Palestinian militants' attacks.

New group Islamic Amal received military and organizational support from the Iranian Revolutionary Guard based in the Bekaa Valley, and emerged as the most prominent and effective Shiah militia that later formed Hezbollah.

Nasrallah worked his way up in Hezbollah as the organization grew. He said that after serving as a fighter, he became the director in Baalbek, then the entire region of Bekaa, then Beirut.

He became Hezbollah's leader in 1992 at the age of 32, after his predecessor Abbas al-Musawi was killed in an Israeli strike. Nasrallah managed low-intensity wars against Israeli forces that ended with their withdrawal from South Lebanon in 2000, although he lost his eldest son Hadi in a shootout with Israeli forces.

After the withdrawal, Nasrallah declared that Hezbollah had achieved the first Arab victory against Israel. He also vowed that Hezbollah will not disarm weapons, saying that they considered "all of Lebanon should be restored", including Shebaa Farms.
