SEAToday.com, Provinsi Enga - Badan Bencana Nasional Papua Nugini, Senin (27/5) menyebutkan sebanyak 2.000 orang diyakini terkubur hidup-hidup akibat tanah longsor yang terjadi di desa Yambali, provinsi Enga, Jumat (24/5). Jumlah ini meningkat tiga kali lipat dari perkiraan PBB sebelumnya, yaitu 670 orang. 

 

Menentukan skala kerusakan bencana sulit dilakukan karena kondisi di lapangan. Lokasi desa yang terpencil di pegunungan Papua Nugini menyulitkan komunikasi dan pengiriman petugas serta bantuan darurat. 

 

Tanah longsor juga mengubur 200 meter ruas jalan utama provinsi tersebut di bawah timbunan puing tanah setinggi 6 meter. Penduduk setempat telah berusaha menggali reruntuhan dengan alat seadanya, namun sulit untuk menemukan korban karena banyaknya batu-batu besar yang hanya dapat dipindahkan oleh alat berat.

 

Bantuan internasional secara resmi diminta oleh pemerintah Papua Nugini karena baru enam jenazah yang berhasil ditemukan hingga Selasa (28/5).
