BMKG Records Aftershocks Triggered by Megathrust Activity in Yogyakarta

SEAToday.com, Jakarta - The Meteorological, Climatological, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) recorded two aftershocks in the Indian Ocean region, south of Gunung Kidul, Yogyakarta Special Region (DIY), on Monday (8/26) night.

This earthquake was triggered by rock deformation activity in the field of contact between plates (megathrust).

Head of BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Center Daryono said that the aftershocks were shallow earthquakes.

The latest parameters of the earthquake were magnitude 5.5 from the previously detected magnitude 5.8 at 19:57 WIB.

BMKG analyzed that this earthquake was felt in various regions, including Sleman, Yogyakarta, Kulonprogo, and Bantul with an intensity scale of III-IV MMI.

In addition, the earthquake was also felt in Karangkates, Malang, Pacitan, Nganjuk, Trenggalek, Madiun, Kediri, Blitar, Cilacap, Banyumas, Solo, Surakarta, and Klaten with an intensity scale of II-III MMI.

However, the earthquake was confirmed to have no tsunami potential.

Nevertheless, the public is still encouraged to be vigilant while remaining calm and not being influenced by issues that cannot be accounted for and always follow the guidance of the local government.
