SEAToday.com, Jakarta - Heavy rainfall on Thursday, (12/5/2024), evening caused landslides and floods in several areas of Banyumas, Central Java. According to Budi Nugroho, the Head of Banyumas BPBD, a landslide blocked the road connecting Panembangan and Sambirata villages.
"The landslide occurred around 7:30 PM in Panembangan Village, Cilongok," he said on Friday, (12/6/2024).
The landslides were triggered by several factors, including fishponds near the site, steep slopes, water-saturated soil, and prolonged heavy rain.
Meanwhile, flooding hit Gumelar Kidul Village due to a broken embankment of the Gular River and Grumbul Karet in Sumpiuh District caused by the Angin River overflowing. "Water levels began receding on Friday morning," said Sumpiuh Subdistrict Head Ahmad Suryanto.
Local residents responded quickly to clear the landslide debris. "Villagers worked together on Thursday night to remove the debris blocking the road," stated Panembangan Village Head Untung Sanyoto. BPBD and Public Works personnel also joined efforts to restore road access.
Additionally, a ground movement incident in Pasinggangan Village caused structural damage to a resident's house. "The combination of heavy rain and unstable soil led to this disaster," said Budi. Monitoring is ongoing to prevent further damage in case of more rain.
Despite the risks, the community remains vigilant and cooperative. "Residents evacuate to safer locations during intense rains," he added. Local authorities are prioritizing disaster response and recovery to minimize the impact on affected areas.
