President Yoon Lifts Martial Law Amid National Assembly Rejection

SEAToday.com, Jakarta - South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol announced the lifting of his controversial martial law order after lawmakers unanimously rejected the decree.

Shortly afterward, his cabinet approved the decision in a State Council meeting, effectively ending the measure. "Martial law will be lifted immediately by accepting the National Assembly’s request," Yoon stated early this morning, (12/4/2024) as quoted from Guardian.

In his full address, Yoon defended his initial decision to impose martial law, citing a need to combat "anti-state forces" threatening liberal democracy.

However, he criticized the National Assembly for what he called "reckless actions" that hinder state functions, referencing impeachment attempts and legislative blockades.

Yoon’s announcement marks a dramatic reversal in a crisis that has drawn widespread criticism from opposition parties and international observers.

His cabinet’s swift approval further highlights the mounting pressure his administration faced over the decree.

The president’s sharp rebuke of the National Assembly underscores the ongoing tensions within the South Korean government.
