SEAToday.com, Jakarta - The Borneo elephant is officially classified as endangered under the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) red list.

According to IUCN’s official website, the elephant’s population has been declining over the past 75 years and there are an estimated 1,000 left in the wild.

IUCN said there are several factors affecting the population reduction, such as the logging of Kalimantan forests that destroyed most of their habitat as well as their habitat being used as plantation and mining areas.

In addition, poaching for ivory, accidental ingestion of agrochemicals, and vehicle collisions are also factors in the decline of the Bornean elephant population.
