Bali BKSDA to Evaluate Bali Zoo After Molly Elephant Swept Away by River
SEAToday.com, Bali - The Bali Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) will conduct an evaluation at Bali Zoo after a Sumatran elephant named Molly died after being swept away by currents in the Wos River on Monday (12/16).
Bali BKSDA Head Ratna Hendratmoko said that giving animals the opportunity to socialize with nature is necessary, but it is important to pay attention to current weather conditions.
"We are concerned, grieving, and also saddened. This is a lesson for all of us, including us, the Bali BKSDA and Bali Zoo, regarding standard operating procedures and accident mitigation. This is part of the tourism industry in Bali, a strategic industry that must be maintained," she said.
Molly was swept away by strong currents while carrying out routine activities of playing in the river with her handler. However, heavy rain that hit the area triggered the river water to flow swiftly and caused the female elephant to be swept away up to 2.8 kilometers from the starting point.
The 45-year-old female elephant was found at the bottom of the Cengceng River and buried on Tuesday (12/17) at around 12 AM Central Indonesian Time.
