Mentawai Airport Inaugurated, Supports Surfing Tourism
Seatoday.com – Jakarta Replacing the old airport, Rokot Sipora, President Joko Widodo inaugurated the operation of Mentawai Airport on Wednesday, October 25th, 2023.
"This is one of the country's outermost airports, replacing the previous airport which only had a runway length of 850 meters," said Jokowi at the inauguration. Apart from that, Sipora airport can only accommodate Chessna planes carrying 12 passengers.
Meanwhile, the new Mentawai Airport has a runway length of 1500 meters with a width of 30 meters. It can accommodate ATR aircraft with a larger capacity.
"Earlier, I told the Minister of Transportation that not only Cessna should come here but ATR should also be brought to Mentawai Island. Because it can take 78 (passengers)," explained the President.
President Joko Widodo has tried to board a plane and land at Mentawai airport before the inauguration. He felt there were no problems and the landing could be done smoothly without any obstacles.
With the inauguration of this airport, President Joko Widodo hopes that people will have easier mobility. This convenience will bring many tourists to the Mentawai Islands.
The inauguration of this airport also supports the existence of surfing, a tourism potential in the Mentawai Islands. With the development of surfing, the tourism sector in this area will develop well. Foreign planes related to surfing activities can also land directly at the airport. All of this can improve the welfare of the surrounding community.
