OHCHR: Israel May Have “Repeatedly Violated” Laws of War
SEAToday.com, Geneva - In an assessment published on Wednesday (6/19), the UN Human Rights Office (OHCHR) stated that the Israeli military “may have repeatedly violated” the laws of war.
The report detailed six attacks done by Israel in Gaza that hit residential buildings, a school, refugee camps, and a market using powerful bombs. The strikes resulted in massive destruction and fatalities which raised concerns regarding the laws of war in principles of “distinction, proportionality, and precautions”.
From these attacks, the report concluded that Israel may have violated “fundamental principles of the laws of war”. In addition, unlawful targeted attacks against civilian population may also “implicate the commission of crimes against humanity”.
“Israel’s choices of methods and means of conducting hostilities in Gaza since 7 October, [...] have failed to ensure that they effectively distinguish between civilians and fighters.” it wrote.
