SEAToday.com, Gaza - The UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) on Saturday (6/15) reported that over 50,000 children in Gaza are in urgent need of treatment for acute malnutrition.

The children are facing starvation as entry of humanitarian aid is still restricted into the enclave. The agency said to continue working to aid the families but they also described the situation as “catastrophic”.

Another UN agency, UNICEF, on Tuesday (6/11) warned that as much as 3,000 children in southern Gaza are at risk of death from acute malnutrition. The children have been cut off from treatment for malnutrition as humanitarian access in the south has declined dramatically.

Initial results from their recent screenings showed an increase of moderate and severe malnutrition since the second week of May, when humanitarian aid access was curbed following Israel's military Rafah offensive.
