SEAToday.com, New York CIty - The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on Monday (6/10) has adopted a resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza.

14 countries voted for the resolution with Russia abstaining. The resolution was led by the US, endorsing the three-phase ceasefire proposal announced by President Joe Biden last month. It also reiterates commitment for the two-state solution.

The plan consists of a first six-week phase to conduct a complete ceasefire, hostage releases, prisoner exchange, return of displaced Palestinians to their home, as well as entry of humanitarian aid. Second phase includes release of the remaining captives and withdrawal of Israeli troops from the enclave. Last phase would be for reconstruction of Gaza, and return of the deceased.

Hamas had said they welcomed the resolution and are ready to work with the mediators. The US had urged Israel to accept the plan, although Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is still skeptical as Israel is still committed to destroying Hamas.
