Claudia Sheinbaum Set to Become Mexico’s First Woman President
SEAToday.com, Mexico City - Claudia Sheinbaum has been elected Mexico's first woman president in the country's 200-year history.
Mexico's electoral authority announced preliminary results on Sunday (6/2) that Sheinbaum won, with 58 to 60 percent of the vote. The closest rival, Xóchitl Gálvez, received at least 26.6 percent of the vote. Meanwhile, Jorge Álvarez Máynez came in third with at least 9.9 percent.
Sheinbaum's result exceeds the 54.71 percent achieved by her mentor, the outgoing president Andrés Manuel López Obrador, back in 2018.
"I will become the first woman president of Mexico," Sheinbaum said during her speech following the announcement. She also promised to build a fair and more prosperous Mexico. "I won't fail you," she told the crowd.
