Mt. Fuji to Impose Daily Climber Limit, Entry Fee
SEAToday.com, Tokyo - Mount Fuji, a UNESCO World Heritage, will impose new restrictions to combat overcrowding and littering issues starting this summer.
The new rules will take effect on July 1 to September 10, 2024, applied to those hiking the Yoshida Trail in Yamanashi. Only 4,000 climbers are allowed to enter per day with a hiking fee of JPY2,000 (approx. USD13).
Of those slots, 3,000 will be available for online booking through their website and the remaining 1,000 can be booked in person on the day of the climb.
In addition, entry will be restricted from 4 p.m. to 3 a.m. except for lodge guests. Climbers must choose between a day hike or an overnight stay at the several available huts along the trail. This is done in order to stop “bullet climbing”, or climbers who rush to the summit without enough rest, which authorities deemed putting lives at risk.
