SEAToday.com, Jakarta - Google has fired 50 employees said to be involved in protests over the company’s cloud-computing contract with the Israeli government. The protest’s organizer group No Tech for Apartheid said on Monday (4/21) that 20 workers have been fired in addition to 30 workers who were fired last week.

Workers organized a sit-in protest at Google offices in New York and Sunnyvale, California, on April 16. The company responded by calling the police, who made arrests.

No Tech for Apartheid spokesperson Jane Chung stated that the company had fired workers, “including non-participating bystanders”. Meanwhile, Google said that it fired workers who were “physically disrupted” after gathering details from their investigation over the protest.

Last week’s protest centered on “Project Nimbus”, a 1.2-billion-dollar contract signed in 2021 for Google and Amazon. It included a deal for the companies to provide the Israeli government with cloud computing and artificial intelligence services.
