SEAToday.com, Jakarta - Anura Kumara Dissanayake, Sri Lanka's newly elected president, made headlines by dissolving Parliament just days after his election. He announced the decision on Tuesday night (24/9/2024), aiming to consolidate power after his recent victory.

The dissolution of Parliament is set to take effect at midnight, with elections scheduled for November 14. This move aligns with Dissanayake's campaign promise to hold early elections, reflecting his intention to strengthen his position in the government.

Despite his party holding only three seats in the 225-member Parliament, this strategic decision could enable Dissanayake to gain a stronger foothold. “This election will help us secure our position in the assembly,” he indicated during his campaign, highlighting the importance of public support, as cited by BBC.

On the same day, Dissanayake appointed Harini Amarasuriya as the first female prime minister in 24 years. This appointment marks a significant step forward for gender representation in Sri Lankan politics. Amarasuriya shares a similar background with Dissanayake, both being part of the National People's Power coalition.

Dissanayake's victory against former President Ranil Wickremesinghe was fueled by widespread discontent with the previous administration. As Sri Lankans seek new leadership amid economic turmoil, Dissanayake's leadership represents hope for change. “We are moving away from the old political guard that led us into this crisis,” he affirmed after his win.

This dissolution and call for elections reflect the dynamic political landscape in Sri Lanka. With these changes, Dissanayake aims to secure a stable government that addresses the pressing issues facing the nation.
