Trump Claims Putin Would Honor Ukraine Peace Deal

SEAToday.com, Jakarta - US President Donald Trump expressed confidence that Russian President Vladimir Putin would honor a potential Ukraine peace deal.
He suggested that US economic involvement, particularly in Ukraine’s critical minerals sector, would deter further Russian aggression.
During his White House meeting with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Trump stressed that any agreement should reclaim as much Ukrainian land as possible but remained noncommittal on deploying US troops for a European-led peacekeeping effort.
However, he reassured that the US would support British military needs if required.
Starmer pressed Trump for firm security commitments, stating, “We’ve discussed a plan today to reach a peace that is tough and fair. That Ukraine will help shape.
That’s backed by strength to stop Putin coming back for more,” as quoted on The Guardian. He emphasized the UK’s readiness to deploy troops and aircraft in support of a peace deal.
Trump downplayed concerns over Russia reneging on an agreement, asserting that securing a deal was the primary challenge. He proposed that significant US investment in Ukraine’s rare earth sector would serve as a deterrent, stating, “We’ll have a lot of people working there… it’s a backstop. I don’t think anybody’s going to play around if we’re there,” as quoted on The Guardian.
Regarding the return of Russian-occupied territories, Trump maintained that efforts would be made to reclaim as much land as possible but stopped short of making firm commitments.
He also dismissed Starmer’s concerns that Putin might invade again without a U.S. military guarantee, insisting that once a deal was in place, Putin would honor it.
Reaffirming his commitment to NATO’s principle of collective defense, Trump acknowledged the UK’s military strength, noting that British forces were highly capable but reiterating US support if assistance was needed.
He also sought to distance himself from previous comments labeling Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy a dictator, instead praising his leadership and resilience.
