With USAID Out, Health Minister Looks for New Funding Sources

SEAToday.com, Jakarta - Indonesia's Minister of Health, Budi Gunadi Sadikin, has announced efforts to secure alternative funding sources following the suspension of USAID assistance.
The move comes after the U.S. government's decision to halt the agency’s financial aid.
During a press conference in Jakarta on Thursday, Budi stated that Indonesia has already secured a commitment of 130 million Australian dollars from Australia.
However, he acknowledged that further funding will be necessary to cover gaps left by the USAID withdrawal.
"Although the Australian dollar has a different value from the U.S. dollar, at least we have secured this commitment. We will continue looking for other donor sources," he said, as quoted by ANTARA News.
USAID has been a significant contributor to Indonesia, providing around $153 million in 2023 for various projects, including anti-corruption initiatives, climate change programs, education, and healthcare.
The health sector alone received substantial aid, such as $882,750 allocated to WHO for polio vaccination efforts and over $3.2 million to support national immunization programs.
While USAID’s assistance has been suspended rather than fully terminated, the reduction in funding is expected to have an impact.
The government is now exploring alternative partnerships to ensure continued support for vital programs.
