Trump's Return to Power and the Dangers of Unchecked Presidential Authority, Said Ex Republican

SEAToday.com, Jakarta - Donald Trump’s return to the White House has raised concerns over the expansion of presidential power. Following his victory over Vice President Kamala Harris, Trump is poised to wield unprecedented influence with few legal or political constraints.
During his first term, Trump dismantled checks on executive power, and his victory positions him to further exploit these loopholes.
“Everybody knew this when they voted yesterday. So yes, the American people voted for basically this unchecked power that the president is going to have,” said former Republican Rep. Adam Kinzinger, as cited by CNN.
Trump’s sweeping authority will be reinforced by a Supreme Court ruling that shields the president from legal repercussions for official actions. This decision, stemming from his attempts to challenge charges related to election meddling, solidifies his position, enabling him to evade future legal consequences.
“America has given us an unprecedented and powerful mandate,” Trump stated after his election victory, as reported by CNN. In addition to this legal shield, Trump faces little opposition from within his party.
His dominance in the Republican Party has driven out dissenters, and figures like Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene have made it clear that opposition within the GOP will not be tolerated.
“I will not let them… neither will the American people,” Greene declared.
Despite concerns over the unchecked use of power, Trump’s supporters have reaffirmed their belief in his strong leadership. However, experts warn that his presidency could pose a significant threat to democracy.
“The danger is very real,” said Corey Brettschneider, a professor of politics, emphasizing the potential for authoritarian actions that could erode democratic institutions.
