Google Doodle Marks International Women's Day

SEAToday.com, Jakarta - The Google Doodle celebrates International Women's Day on March 8. The doodle features a series of female characters from different generations who appear to be gathered in a quilt embroidered with symbols of progress over the years.

The doodle is also framed by a circular line that also symbolizes the second "O" of the word "Google”.

Women's Day Celebration History

The celebration of Women's Day began in 1908 with a demonstration in New York City where 15,000 women marched, demanding shorter working hours, better pay, and the right to vote. A year later, the Socialist Party of America declared the first National Women's Day.

The idea to make it an international event came from a women's rights activist, Clara Zetkin. In 1910, she proposed it at the International Conference of Working Women in Copenhagen, and it was unanimously supported by 100 women from 17 countries who attended the conference. Then, in 1975, the United Nations began celebrating the day for the first time. Today, International Women's Day is celebrated around the world, where women are recognized for their achievements regardless of national, ethnic, linguistic, cultural, economic, or political differences.
