47 Tigers in Vietnam Zoos Die from Bird Flu

SEAToday.com, Hanoi - On Wednesday (2/10), state media said that 47 tigers, three lions and a panther have died in zoos in south Vietnam due to the H5N1 bird flu virus.
The deaths took place in August and September at My Quynh Safari Park and Vuon Xoai Zoo, both located near Ho Chi Minh City, as reported by Vietnam News Agency (VNA).
According to test result from the National Center for Animal Health Diagnosis, the animals died because of bird flu-type A virus.
A representative from Voan Xoai Tourist Park stated thay strict protective measures are being enforced for the remaining 20 Bengal Tigers and other rare wildlife.
Education for Nature Vietnam (ENV), an NGO that focuses on wildlife conservation, said there were a total of 385 tigers living in captivity in Vietnam at the end of 2023.
Health officials are also coordinating with veterinary and forestry authorities, to prevent transmission to humans and monitoring those who had close contact with the animals.
