President Jokowi Assures the Government to Follow the Constitutional Court's Decision Regarding the Election Law

SEAToday.com, Jakarta - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) assures that the government will follow the decision of the Constitutional Court (MK) related to the Election Law. This was conveyed by Jokowi after attending the National Amanah Party (PAN) Congress in Jakarta on Friday (8/23).

In addition to following the Constitutional Court's binding decision, Jokowi denied that the government would make a Regulation in Lieu of Law or Perppu to cancel the Constitutional Court's decision on the Pilkada Law. “No, there is no Perppu,” Jokowi told reporters.

Regarding the dynamics in the Legislative Body of the House of Representatives, which intends to revise the Pilkada Law regarding the candidate threshold and age limit, Jokowi said it was part of the legislature.

Jokowi also gave a response some time ago after the Constitutional Court's decision came out and was immediately responded coldly by the DPR to immediately make revisions. “Yes, we respect the decision authority of each state institution. That is a constitutional process that usually occurs in state institutions,” Jokowi said on the Presidential Secretariat's YouTube channel.

The plan to revise the Pilkada Law echoed and will be passed to the plenary session. This is expected to trigger a polemic. Many parties, starting from students and other elements of society, moved to hold a demonstration at the MPR / DPR building on Thursday (22/8).

But the plenary meeting that had been scheduled for 09.00 a.m. was finally canceled. Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Sufmi Dasco Ahmad immediately gave a statement that the plan to revise the Pilkada Law was temporarily canceled. The decision was welcomed with joy.

Although many demonstrators had to clash with the police who tried to block them when they wanted to enter the MPR / DPR building, some had even damaged the fence of the people's representative building.

Hundreds of people were reportedly secured by the police and taken to several police stations around the MPR / DPR building such as West Jakarta Police, Central Jakarta Police, to Polda Metro Jaya. A number of people were also reportedly injured in clashes with the police.

The Constitutional Court stated that political parties that do not get seats in the DPRD can nominate candidate pairs. The calculation of the requirement to propose a candidate pair through a political party or a coalition of political parties participating in the election is based on the results of the valid vote in the election in the area concerned.

The Constitutional Court also stipulated that the age requirement for regional head candidates must be met at the time of the determination of candidate pairs participating in the Pilkada by the General Election Commission (KPU). This is stated in Decree Number 70/PUU-XXII/2024.
