SEAToday.com, Jakarta - Several US officials on Wednesday (7/10) stated that the pier built by the US military to deliver sea-borne humanitarian aid into Gaza will be permanently dismantled within a few days.
The floating structure was reinstalled in Gaza on Wednesday after recently moved to Ashdod port in Israel due to poor weather. The current goal is to deliver humanitarian aid accumulated in Cyprus before they dismantle the pier and depart.
The pier’s effectiveness had been hampered by bad weather and safety concerns of aid workers distributing the aid. In total, it had been relocated to Israel thrice, and operationally, it was only anchored 23 out of 53 days.
8,800 metric tons of aid had been unloaded off the pier, or an equivalent of a single-day delivery before the conflict began.
