Dozens Killed as 7.4 Magnitude Earthquake Rocks Japan

SEAToday.com, Ishikawa-At least 13 people were killed when a magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan, on Tuesday (1/1). The earthquake, which was also felt in Niigata, Toyama and Fukui prefectures, Nagano, Gifu, Tokyo, Yamagata, Fukushima, Ibaraki, Tochigi, Gunma, Saitama, Shizuoka, Aichi, Mie, Shiga, Kyoto, Osaka, Hyogo, Nara, Tottori, Iwate, Miyagi and Akita, caused tsunami waves in several areas. Several people were seriously injured, and buildings, roads, vehicles, and ships were damaged by the earthquake.

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said that about 1,000 members of Japan's self-defense forces have been deployed to conduct search and rescue operations in the quake-hit areas. Japan's Meteorological Agency lifted all tsunami advisories along the Sea of Japan, on Tuesday (1/2).

Meanwhile, Indonesia's foreign ministry said there are 1,315 Indonesian citizens living in Ishikawa Prefecture. It is known that as many as 18 Indonesian citizens living in Suzu City, Ishikawa Prefecture were forced to spend the night outdoors on a hill after the great earthquake. The Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo and the Indonesian Consulate General in Osaka continue to coordinate with local authorities to learn more about the impact of the earthquake and tsunami.

In addition, the Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo and the Indonesian Consulate General in Osaka have also released HOTLINE numbers for Indonesian citizens in emergency conditions.

And to anticipate aftershocks and make evacuation easier, residents are asked to prepare emergency backpacks, containing:

  1. Flashlight.
  2. Mineral water.
  3. Medicines.
  4. Instant food.
  5. Clothes.
