Death Toll from Los Angeles Wildfires Rises to 13

SEAToday.com, Jakarta – The death toll from wildfires that have ravaged various areas in Los Angeles, California, has risen from 11 to 13, according to an NBC News report citing official government data on Sunday (1/11). U.S. President Joe Biden warned that the number might increase as many residents remain unaccounted for.
The wildfires, which first broke out on Tuesday, January 7, 2025, have forced tens of thousands of people to evacuate. Experts cite extremely dry conditions and strong winds as the main factors driving the rapid spread of the flames. To date, more than 10,000 buildings have been destroyed by the disaster.
California Governor Gavin Newsom stated early Friday morning (1/10) that the California National Guard had been deployed to Los Angeles to maintain security and prevent looting in evacuation zones.
Wildfires are a recurring problem in California, particularly during the summer and early fall when the Santa Ana winds blow strongly, and temperatures soar. Los Angeles is one of the hardest-hit areas due to its proximity to forests and dry lands. Climate change, which extends summer seasons and exacerbates dry conditions, has also contributed to the increasing severity of these wildfires year after year.
With widespread damage and ongoing threats, this wildfire serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by the climate crisis.
