SEAToday.com, Washington - The Israeli government and Lebanon's Hezbollah have reportedly agreed to a ceasefire deal, ending the 14-month conflict. This was announced by US President Joe Biden on Tuesday (11/26), as the broker with France.
He also mentioned that this agreement came into effect at 4 AM local time, and will end the fighting on the Lebanese-Israeli border.
“This is designed to be a permanent cessation of hostilities,” Biden said. “What is left of Hezbollah and other terrorist organizations will not be allowed, I emphasize, will not be allowed, to threaten the security of Israel again.”
President Biden explained that, within the next 60 days, the Lebanese army will be deployed to take control of its territory, while Israel will withdraw its troops from the area.
Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu previously expressed his support for the deal but also vowed to retaliate if Hezbollah violates the agreement.
At least 55 people were killed on Monday (Nov 25) in Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon, bringing the death toll since October 2023 to 3,823, Lebanon's Health Ministry said on Tuesday.
Another 160 people were wounded in the past 24 hours, raising the number of wounded to 15,859.
