President Joko Widodo Wears Kutai Kartanegara Traditional Attire in 79th Indonesian Independence Day Ceremony
SEAToday.com, Nusantara - President Joko Widodo wore traditional attire of Kutai Kartanegara Sultanate, East Kalimantan during the 79th Indonesian Independence Day Ceremony at the State Palace, Nusantara Capital City on Saturday (8/17).
The Kutai Kartanegara Kingdom is one of the oldest kingdoms in Indonesia and is considered a precursor to the Indonesian archipelago.
President Jokowi wore East Kalimantan traditional attire that have a combination of black and gold color patterns. First Lady Iriana Jokowi also wore similar traditional clothes from East Kalimantan.
Takwo, the traditional Kutai attire, is commonly worn at weddings today. Historically, this shirt was reserved for nobility or dancers during ceremonial occasions. However, the Takwo has evolved into a popular wedding garment for people of all social standings.
Crafted from cotton, linen, or velvet, the Takwo resembles a high-necked, closed suit. A cloth panel known as a jelapah covers the chest from the neck to the hips. The Takwo is typically paired with a long cloth with a broken parang motif and golden tassels.
