SEAToday.com, Jiangsu - Doctor Cao Guoping discovered the rare blood type subtype P during a routine blood test at a hospital in Taizhou, Jiangsu Province, China.

Guoping stated that this finding is very important, especially for individuals with this blood type. Due to the rarity of this blood type, early detection would help prepare better if a blood transfusion is needed. This is because blood type P can only receive transfusions of the same type.

So far, China has only about a dozen documented cases of people with blood type P. Following this discovery, staff at Taixing People's Hospital submitted the genetic sequence to the GenBank sequence database, an open-access collection managed by the National Biotechnology Information Centre in the United States for recording.
