SEAToday.com, Ishikawa - The death toll from Japan’s 7.5-magnitude earthquake that happened on Jan 1 reached 161, said authorities on Monday (1/8).

The number of missing people fell to 103 from 195. But rescue efforts were still hampered due to the heavy rain and snow in the region. Thousands of rescuers have been drafted in from all over Japan, but their work was complicated by roads being cut off by the quake and an estimated 1,000 landslides.

Because of the quake, at least 2,000 people are cut off due to massive damage to roads. Thousand others are lacking power or living in emergency shelters. The defense ministry on Sunday said 6,000 troops had been sent to help with the relief mission, including handing out supplies such as food, water and blankets for those who have had to vacate their homes.
