SEAToday.com, Gaza - South Africa filed a case at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) against Israel for breaching obligations under the 1948 Genocide Convention on Friday (12/29).

The application describes Israel's action in Gaza as “genocidal in character because they are intended to bring about the destruction of a substantial part of the Palestinian national, racial, and ethnic group”. The actions include killing Palestinians in Gaza, causing them serious bodily and mental harm, and inflicting on them conditions of life calculated to bring about their physical destruction.

As members of the UN, both South Africa and Israel are bound by the court. No date has been set for the hearing. However, Israel's Foreign Ministry said in a reaction that the suit was "baseless."
