50 More Rohingya Asylum Seekers Arrive in Aceh, Initially Run and Hide, Police Say
SEAToday.com, Aceh - A total of 50 asylum seekers from Rohingya arrived in Seuneubok Baroh Village, Darul Aman Subdistrict, East Aceh Regency on Thursday (12/14).
East Aceh Police Chief Adj. Senior Comm. Andy Rahmansyah, said that according to the information they received, after getting off the ship at Kuala Idi Cut Beach, the refugees ran and hid in the bushes until they were finally found. He also mentioned that initially only 43 people were found, until a sweep was carried out again resulting in the findings of 7 other people. These 50 asylum seekers were all male. The officers then secured them at the Idi Cut Fish Auction Site.
The local government's plan to deal with these asylum seekers is not yet known. The government has previously stated that they are urging the UNHCR and related international organizations to issue a policy on this situation.
To date, there are 1,734 Rohingya asylum seekers in Aceh who are accommodated in a number of locations in the province.
