Indonesia to Apply for Non-Permanent Member of UN Security Council 2029-2030 Period
SEAToday.com, New York - Indonesia has submitted its candidacy as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the period 2029-2030.
This was announced by Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi when delivering her final speech at the General Debate Session of the 79th Session of the UN General Assembly in New York, United States, Saturday (28/9).
“This candidacy reflects our deep commitment to contribute to world peace and security,” Retno said.
Indonesia has been elected as a non-permanent member of the Security Council four times, first in 1973-1974, then 1995-1996, 2007-2008, and finally 2019-2020.
Retno explained that global leadership is not inherited and does not just appear, “it does not fall from the sky” to quote her.
Therefore, leadership must be achieved through collective efforts. And, these efforts are in line with the essence of Indonesia's foreign policy, namely peace, justice, and humanity.
Indonesia often criticizes the current leadership of the Security Council, considering that many global issues have failed to be resolved.
One major issue is the conflict in Palestine. In a previous forum, Retno questioned the leadership of the Security Council to create peace.
“Reforming the Security Council is very necessary to ensure leadership for peace,” Retno said.
Two things must be done in this reform: a more democratic decision-making mechanism and accommodating more voices from the world community-not just a handful of countries.
