SEAToday.com, Jakarta - Indonesian Ministry of Religious Affairs (Kemenag) has announced that prospective Hajj pilgrims must ensure their National Health Insurance (JKN) membership is active.

This requirement aims to provide health protection from preparation, departure, and throughout their journey until they return to Indonesia.

The Director of Domestic Hajj Services at the Directorate General of Hajj and Umrah (PHU), Muhammad Zain, stated that all regular Hajj pilgrims must have an active JKN membership.

This will be regulated in the Minister of Religious Affairs Decree (KMA) regarding the technical procedures for filling the regular Hajj quota and settling Hajj costs for 2025.

"Regular pilgrims must ensure their BPJS Health membership is active before departure. The goal is to provide comprehensive health protection, from preparation, execution, to returning home," said Muhammad Zain on Wednesday (2/12).

Zain explained that JKN provides health coverage both before and after the pilgrimage. If a pilgrim falls ill before departure, BPJS Health will cover the medical expenses.

Similarly, upon returning to Indonesia, if further medical treatment is needed, BPJS Health will cover the costs according to applicable regulations.

Previously, BPJS membership was not a mandatory requirement. With this new regulation, pilgrims’ health is better ensured, both before departure and after their return.

"In general, health protection remains the same. However, the difference this year is that all regular Hajj pilgrims are now required to have active JKN membership," he said.

All Hajj pilgrims are expected to ensure their JKN membership is active before their departure. With this protection, both pilgrims and Hajj officers can feel safer and more comfortable while performing the pilgrimage.

"Their health remains safeguarded from preparation until they return to Indonesia," he concluded.
