Indonesia Pushes for Thorough Inquiry into Shooting Incident Involving Its Citizen by Malaysian Authorities

SEAToday.com, Jakarta - Indonesia’s Foreign Minister, Sugiono, has called for a thorough investigation into the shooting incident involving Malaysia’s Maritime Enforcement Agency (APMM) in the waters of Tanjung Rhu, Selangor. The incident resulted in the death of an Indonesian citizen (WNI) and injuries to several others.
In an official statement received on Monday evening, the Foreign Minister expressed deep regret over the loss of life. "The Foreign Minister urges a comprehensive investigation into the shooting by APMM, including allegations of excessive use of force," stated the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a written release.
Sugiono also extended his condolences to the family of the deceased and the injured Indonesian citizens.
The incident occurred early Friday (January 24), when a boat carrying five undocumented Indonesian migrant workers was intercepted by APMM patrols. The shooting reportedly took place after the Indonesians on board allegedly resisted.
Judha Nugraha, Director for the Protection of Indonesian Citizens at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated that the identities of the victims are still being verified. Meanwhile, the Indonesian Migrant Workers Protection Agency (KP2MI) reported one fatality and four injuries in the incident.
KP2MI Minister Abdul Kadir Karding called for transparent legal proceedings. He also assured that access to the injured victims would be granted starting Wednesday (January 29) to provide the necessary assistance.
KP2MI Deputy Minister Christina Aryani strongly condemned the excessive use of force by Malaysian authorities. She urged the Malaysian government to investigate the use of firearms that resulted in the death of the Indonesian citizen.
This incident has drawn serious attention from the Indonesian government, reaffirming its commitment to protecting the rights and safety of its citizens abroad.
