Junta Myanmar Umumkan UU Wajib Militer

SEAToday.com, Naypyidaw - Pemerintah militer Myanmar pada hari Sabtu (2/10) untuk pertama kalinya mengaktifkan undang-undang wajib militer (conscription law).
Dalam undang-undang sudah ada sejak satu dekade lalu tersebut, semua pria berusia 18-35 tahun dan wanita berusia 18-27 tahun harus menjalani wajib militer setidaknya selama 2 tahun, sementara para spesialis seperti dokter yang berusia hingga 45 tahun harus menjalani wajib militer selama 3 tahun. Waktu wajib militer dapat diperpanjang hingga 5 tahun selama keadaan darurat.
Kebijakan wajib militer diumumkan di media pemerintah, menyusul kemunduran terbesar militer dalam mengatasi perlawanan terhadap pemerintahannya. Myanmar mengalami kekacauan setelah militernya merebut kekuasaan dari pemerintah sipil terpilih Aung San Suu Kyi pada tahun 2021, yang memicu protes massal dan perlawanan keras di seluruh negeri.
Tiga tahun kemudian, junta masih berjuang untuk menahan oposisi dari dua sisi, kekuatan pro-demokrasi setelah kudeta tahun 2021, serta kelompok-kelompok etnis minoritas bersenjata dan terlatih yang telah memperjuangkan otonominya selama beberapa dekade.
