SEAToday.com, Jakarta - Pope Francis passed away on Monday morning at the age of 88 in his residence at Casa Santa Marta, Vatican City.

At 9:45 AM local time, Cardinal Kevin Farrell, Camerlengo of the Apostolic Chamber, officially announced the pontiff’s death from Casa Santa Marta.

"Dearest brothers and sisters, with deep sorrow I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis. At 7:35 this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the house of the Father. His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and of His Church. He taught us to live the values of the Gospel with fidelity, courage, and universal love, especially in favor of the poorest and most marginalized. With immense gratitude for his example as a true disciple of the Lord Jesus, we commend the soul of Pope Francis to the infinite merciful love of the One and Triune God," he said as quoted on the Vatican News.

Pope Francis died following prolonged health complications, including a recent diagnosis of bilateral pneumonia. He had been admitted to the Agostino Gemelli Polyclinic Hospital on February 14, 2025, and spent 38 days under medical care before returning to Casa Santa Marta to continue his recovery. However, his condition worsened in the weeks that followed.

Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Argentina, the future pope underwent a lung operation in his early twenties due to a severe respiratory infection. In later years, he experienced recurrent respiratory issues, which led to the cancellation of several international trips, including a planned visit to the United Arab Emirates in November 2023.

The Vatican has confirmed that funeral arrangements will follow the second edition of the Ordo Exsequiarum Romani Pontificis, the updated liturgical guide for papal funerals, personally approved by Pope Francis in April 2024. The revised rites reflect his wishes for a simple and humble farewell, centered on faith and service.

“The renewed rite,” explained Archbishop Diego Ravelli, Master of Apostolic Ceremonies, as quoted on the Vatican News, “seeks to emphasise even more that the funeral of the Roman Pontiff is that of a pastor and disciple of Christ and not of a powerful person of this world.”
