Magnitude 7.7 Earthquake Shakes Myanmar and Reaches Thailand

SEAToday.com, Jakarta - A 7.7-magnitude earthquake shook the Sagaing region of Myanmar on Friday (3/28).

It was followed by a 6.4-magnitude aftershock 12 minutes later, according to a US Geological Survey report.

The Sagaing region is located in northwestern Myanmar and has a population of more than 5 million people.

Both earthquakes had a depth of 10 kilometers.

The most severely affected areas of Myanmar are in the central part of the country. The quake also caused disruptions to mobile communications.

As a result of this earthquake, a number of buildings and roads were damaged.

The earthquake was also felt in Thailand and neighboring countries.

The event led to the collapse of a high-rise building that was still under construction in Bangkok's Chatucha District.

Initial reports from Bangkok authorities stated that 43 people were injured, while two people were found dead as a result of the collapse.

Meanwhile, a state of emergency has been declared in six regions and states in Myanmar due to this disaster.
