SEAToday.com, Jakarta-Atlet angkat besi Ukraina Oleksandr Pielieshenko tewas saat berperang dalam perang negaranya dengan Rusia. Kabar duka ini disampaikan melalui pernyataan dari Komite Olimpiade Ukraina dan Federasi Angkat Besi Ukraina yang diunggah Senin, 6 Mei 2024.
"Pada 5 Mei, master olahraga Ukraina Oleksandr Pielieshenko tewas dalam perang melawan musuh; seorang kontestan Olimpiade 2016, di mana ia menempati posisi ke-4 dan dua kali juara angkat besi Eropa," tulis Komite Olimpiade Nasional Ukraina di media sosial.
Pernyataan menambahkan bahwa sejak hari pertama invasi besar-besaran, Oleksandr bergabung dengan Angkatan Bersenjata. "Kemarin kami menerima kabar duka atas kematiannya. Keluarga Olimpiade menyampaikan belasungkawa kepada keluarga, teman, dan kerabat atlet tersebut. Kenangan cerah dan abadi dari Pahlawan!," lanjut pernyataan itu.
Dilansir dari CNN, Pielieshenko sempat mewakili Ukraina di Olimpiade Rio 2016. Pria berusia 30 tahun itu adalah peraih medali emas Eropa dua kali, memenangkan kelas berat 85 kg di Kejuaraan Angkat Besi Eropa 2016 dan 2017.
"Kami menyampaikan belasungkawa terdalam kami kepada keluarga dan semua orang yang mengenal Oleksandr!," kata Federasi Angkat Besi Ukraina pada Senin dalam pernyataannya.
Pelatih angkat besi nasional Ukraina Viktor Slobodianiuk mengatakan dalam sebuah unggahan di media sosial, "Perang membutuhkan yang terbaik… Master Olahraga Ukraina yang Terhormat, juara Eropa dua kali, kontestan angkat besi Olimpiade Oleksandr Pielieshenko meninggal secara heroik saat membela Ukraina dari penjajah."
Ia juga mengungkapkan, "Saya menyampaikan belasungkawa yang tulus kepada keluarga dan kerabat Oleksandr. Ini merupakan kerugian yang sangat besar bagi seluruh komunitas angkat besi Ukraina."
