SEAToday.com, Jakarta - Perubahan iklim mempengaruhi rotasi bumi dan menyebabkan hari menjadi lebih panjang, ungkap studi yang dipublikasikan, Senin (15/7) di Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Penelitian menjelaskan ketika bumi menghangat, gletser dan lapisan es mencair. Air yang mencair mengalir dari kutub ke khatulistiwa, mengubah bentuk bumi menjadi lebih menggembung di bagian tengah, dan membuat rotasi bumi melambat. 

Studi yang didanai NASA menyebut fenomena ini sebagai polar motion, di mana pergeseran massa menyebabkan bumi bergoyang saat berputar dan porosnya bergeser.

Meskipun perubahan ini telah tercatat sejak tahun 1900, hari menjadi lebih panjang sekitar 1,33 milidetik per 100 tahun sejak tahun 2000, perubahan terbesar dibandingkan abad-abad sebelumnya. Salah satu penulis studi tersebut, Surendra Adhikari, mengatakan bahwa perubahan yang berhubungan dengan iklim, baik akibat manusia maupun tidak, merupakan pendorong kuat perubahan rotasi bumi. Jika emisi terus meningkat, pemanjangan hari akibat perubahan iklim dapat mencapai 2,62 milidetik per abad.
