SEAToday.com, Jakarta-The Palestinian flag, which has four colors: red, black, white, and green, was adopted by the Palestine Liberation Organization on May 28, 1964.

These colors are derived from the Pan-Arab palette, a visual unity seen across the Arab world. Flags with similar stripes and triangles have been used by Arabs since the Arab Revolt (1916-1918).

Beyond its visual appeal, the Palestinian flag embodies the aspirations of its people.

The red color symbolizes the flag of Islamic leaders in Andalusia and the triumphs of Arab Muslim tribes. It also represents two influential groups in Islamic history, namely the Ashraf of Hijaz and the Hashimids.

The black color represents the banner of the Prophet Muhammad’s fighting forces.

The white color is the flag used during the Umayyad dynasty, which ruled Damascus and was the symbol of the battle of Badr.

Finally, green was used during the Fatimid dynasty of North Africa as a symbol of loyalty to Ali bin Abi Talib.
