SEAToday.com, Singapore-On January 13, Singapore’s Ministry of Defence emphasized that the Singapore armed forces did not participate in the latest military strikes against Yemen’s Houthis. The ministry however underlined that Singapore is involved in a multinational task force that aims to keep the ships safe in the Red Sea.

The United States military recently carried out another strike on the Houthi rebels, after the militants warned of further attacks on ships in the Red Sea. The strike came a day after dozens of U.S. and British strikes on the Iran-backed group’s facilities.

The Iran-backed Houthi have said that the attacks are meant to show support for the Palestinian armed group Hamas in its war against Israel in the Gaza Strip.

As a response to queries, the Ministry of Defence of Singapore clarified that Singapore is only taking part in Operation Prosperity Guardian or O-P-G, which is an international maritime security force formed to respond to Yemeni Houthi attacks on shipping vessels in the Red Sea.

Moreover, Operation Prosperity Guardian also involves over 20 countries that focus on protecting shipping vessels through maritime patrols or information sharing, hence it is not related to the military strikes against the Houthis.

Other than that, Singapore will also participate in the Prosperity Guardian operation by deploying a team of planners to work with international partners and formulate plans. (ELISEA/ALVIN)
