Mount Semeru Shuts Down for Climbers Until January 16

SEAToday.com, Jakarta - The Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park (TNBTS) decided to temporarily close the Mount Semeru climbing route on January 2-16, 2025.

This is due to considering extreme weather conditions that have the potential to occur in early 2025.

The temporary closure of the Mount Semeru hiking trail was officially announced by the TNBTS Center through Announcement Letter Number: PG.12/T.8/TU/KSA.5.1/B/12/2024.

“Based on the consideration of extreme weather conditions in early 2025, the TNBTS Center will temporarily close the Semeru climbing route on January 2-16, 2025,” said TNBTS Head Rudijanta Tjahja Nugraja.

The closure of the Mount Semeru climbing route is the result of an evaluation in the field. Meanwhile, the last climbing departure activity on January 31, 2024 and the last return on January 1, 2025.

“This decision was made as an anticipatory step to avoid unwanted things, ensure the safety and comfort of visitors,” he said.

The public, especially climbers, are also expected to understand the decision that has been taken by the TNBTS.

“We hope that all prospective visitors comply with this announcement and do not carry out illegal climbing activities,” he concluded.

The Mount Semeru climbing route was closed for five years, before finally being reopened by the TNBTS Center as of December 23, 2024.

The climbing limit applied is only up to the Ranu Kumbolo area. In addition, the daily quota provided is only 200 climbers and must be accompanied by a Registered Mount Semeru Guide Association (PPGST).
