SEAToday.com, Berlin - Germany said that it would detain Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant if the International Criminal Court (ICC) issues arrest warrants for the pair, said spokesperson for Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Wednesday (5/22).

“Of course. Yes, we abide by the law,” said spokesperson Steffen Hebestreit when asked whether Germany would execute the ICC warrant against the Israeli PM. Hebestreit also affirmed that Germany will continue to support the ICC, which means taking their decision seriously and implementing it.

The German Foreign Ministry previously responded to the arrest warrant application on Monday (5/20), saying it “respects the independence and procedures” of the ICC while noting that it has some concerns. It highlighted that the court would have to answer difficult questions such as “its jurisdiction” and “complementarity of investigations between constitutional states affected”.
