BRIN Launches 2024 Regional Competitiveness Index

SEAToday.com, Jakarta - The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) launched the 2024 Regional Competitiveness Index (IDSD) as a strategic tool for evidence-based policy-making.
Deputy for Research and Innovation Policy, Boediastoeti Ontowirjo, emphasized that the methodology of IDSD 2024 has been refined to better reflect regional needs.
“We ensure that every indicator in IDSD aligns with the 2025-2029 RPJMN (National Medium-Term Development Plan) targets and national priorities such as industrial downstreaming, food and energy self-sufficiency, and job creation,” she said, as quoted on Antara, in Jakarta on Wednesday.
To support IDSD implementation, BRIN is strengthening regional innovation ecosystems through institutional mentoring. Deputy for Regional Research and Innovation, Yopi, highlighted BRIN’s role in assisting local governments in establishing Regional Research and Innovation Agencies (Brida), which are now present in 22 provinces and 166 districts/cities.
"Through Brida, IDSD can serve as a key reference for formulating data-driven development policies, allowing regions to adopt more targeted competitiveness strategies," Yopi explained as quoted on Antara.
IDSD 2024, based on the World Economic Forum’s Global Competitiveness Index (GCI) 2019, evaluates four key components—enabling environment, human resources, markets, and innovation ecosystems—alongside 12 competitiveness pillars, including infrastructure, macroeconomic stability, labor skills, financial systems, and innovation capabilities.
With expanded coverage across 38 provinces and 514 districts/cities, IDSD offers a comprehensive overview of Indonesia’s regional competitiveness.
“With IDSD 2024, we hope local governments will be more encouraged to adopt evidence-based policies, strengthen innovation, and improve regional competitiveness,” Boediastoeti stated as quoted on Antara.
BRIN remains committed to monitoring and evaluating regional competitiveness to ensure more equitable and sustainable national development.
