SEAToday.com, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has issued an early warning for potential coastal flooding or rob in six coastal regions of East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) until January 1, 2025.
“Communities along the coastline are urged to remain vigilant as rob is forecasted between December 31, 2024, and January 1, 2025,” said Yandri Anderudson Tungga, Head of the Maritime Meteorology Station Tenau, on Monday in Kupang.
Rob occurs when seawater inundates coastal areas due to tidal surges or heavy rainfall. According to Yandri, the phenomenon will impact coastal areas of Flores, Alor, Rote, Sabu Raijua, Sumba, and Timor. The new moon phase on December 31 is expected to cause a significant rise in maximum tidal levels.
“Based on tidal predictions, wind speeds, and moderate rainfall potential, these conditions may influence coastal dynamics in NTT, triggering rob,” he added. This flooding could disrupt activities in coastal and port areas, including residential settlements, salt farming, fisheries, and loading operations.
The BMKG has highlighted the importance of preparedness to mitigate risks. “Residents near the coastline should remain alert and ready to face potential impacts of maximum seawater tides,” Yandri advised. The agency also urged the public to stay updated with maritime weather forecasts.
Regular monitoring and proactive measures are critical to reducing the potential impact of coastal flooding. Awareness and early action can ensure safety and minimize disruptions in affected regions.
